This handsome copy of an American sack back Windsor rocking chair is perfect for a favorite doll or for display on shelf or table. It stands 14 inches high, measures 6 inches high to the seat, 9 inches across the arms and 9 1/2 inches from end to end on the rockers. It weighs 3/4 of a pound and is in excellent condition with no damage. The wood is stained in cherry and then lightly "antiqued" with a brown glaze, then topped with a final clear glaze. The logo of the maker, American Heirloom Collection, is stamped in black on the underside of the seat.
This small rocking chair has many of the design elements of a full-size one. The steam-bent curved back has spindles piercing the arm rail. The flattened arm rests are nailed to the double bobbin supports. The shaped saddle seat, 5/8 inches thick, is supported by 4 splayed legs with spool turnings that are notched onto the rockers. The legs are connected by two stretchers with spindle carvings, with a third one placed horizontally between them, forming an "H" assembly. The chair back and legs are round-tenoned, pushed into round holes drilled in the wood.
We only had one doll at hand, the little antique cloth boy measuring 10 1/2 inches tall shown in our last photo. We hope this may give you some idea how large a doll could comfortably sit in this wonderful rocking chair, if you choose to use it for one of your dolls.
