This interesting and decorative carved wooden swan was both hand painted and decoupaged and then gilded as well. The look is Asian/ Far Eastern, particularly with its "crowned" head and its batik-type motifs, with the colors of black, red and gold reminiscent of Russian Khokhloma painting. Its head and neck were hand painted in detail with an orange beak, large eyes with beady protruding black pupils and a mottled black and red neck. The feathers were carved, then covered with fabric, à la decoupage, and the edges of the feathers were highlighted in gold. Finally, the piece was given a clear coat of lacquer. It's mounted on a wooden plinth painted black with a gold wash trim that allows the wood grain to show through.
The overall height of this handsome piece is 12 1/2 inches; the base is 2 inches high and 4 1/2 by 5 3/4 inches. It weighs in 1 1/4 pounds and is in excellent condition. It's large enough and dramatic enough to stand on its own yet works well in a group.
