A nice sturdy wooden bucket in excellent condition, this antique firkin was painted Colonial red, a nice warm brick color. The outside of the bucket, the 1 inch wide wooden swing handle and the three wooden hoops are all painted, while the inside and the bottom were left unpainted. There is no indication of any previous paint color other than the red anywhere on the bucket or handle, although there is a bit of gray paint around the tacks on the bottom two hoops. Those fasteners, interestingly enough, are daisy upholstery tacks; they hold the steam bent wooden hoops onto the tongue-and-groove staves and fasten the tapered fingers to the hoops, much like a Shaker box is made.

The bucket measures 9 1/4 inches tall to the top of the bucket; with the handle up, 13 1/4 inches. The inside measurement of the open top is approximately 7 1/4 inches; it's about 1/8 inch out of round. The shape flares out to a bottom that's 9 1/4 inches across. It weighs 2 pounds 10 ounces.

The staves on this firkin are solidly in place and there are no cracks, missing pieces or other damage. The quality of its construction is first-rate. The old red paint is alligatored in places but intact on all surfaces. It's one of the nicer antique wooden buckets we've had over the years and displays beautifully.
