Hoosier artist Bertha M. Hatton (1890-1971) was born in Terre Haute, Indiana, the daughter of locally prominent photographer Thomas F. Hatton. Known for her landscape paintings, she painted this vivid scene in oils on canvas board that depicts the pass over White Mountain, Oregon, after a trip there, probably in the 1940's. Done in Realism style with minimal impasto, the artwork displays the road over the 2,221 foot summit of the Oregon peak, flanked with tall fir trees and draped in snow. It's signed "B.H. Duke" on the lower right; since she married Raymond Duke in 1910, it was definitely done after that, since she signed her married surname.

This sight size of this original oil painting measures approximately 13 1/2 inches by 9 1/2 inches. It's surrounded by a 2 3/4 inch wide stepped oak frame. The overall framed measurements are 18 1/4 inches by 14 1/4 inches and it weighs 2 3/4 pounds. As you can see in our photo, the back dust paper was torn when we found it and the hanging wire was in sad shape. We had our framer replace both, but preserved the notation on the original paper that states "White Mtn. Pass Oregon" in what appears to be the artist's handwriting. This handsome painting is now ready to hang and enjoy.
