This cheerful folk pottery wall platter was made in the town of El Puente del Arzobispo, across the river from Talavera, Spain. Gaily hand painted in blues, greens and golden yellow, typical colors for Puente pottery, the decorations are also characteristic of Puente: stylized flowers and foliage and a woman dressed in traditional clothing, portrayed carrying a sheaf of wheat. The pottery made there often resembles that of the 16th and 17th centuries and is so appealing due to the quaint drawings and bright colors. The clay used is a very pale terracotta, glazed heavily with creamy white and a glossy top glaze.

This footed platter is 11 1/2 inches in diameter, stands about 1 1/2 inches high and weighs a bit under 2 1/2 pounds. In excellent condition, with only a glaze pop or two and a dot of cobalt blue on the back, it is immaculate and ready to use and display. There are twin holes in the back rim so you can hang it if you wish. The bottom is signed in black "Ceramical Puente" along with the mark of the pottery business. Artisans who want to make traditional pottery discovered El Puente del Arzobispo to be more focused on quality and less on tourism. Many of those potteries are family run and often have just a few people, who do all the potting, glazing and painting, making these pieces true folk pottery, each one of a kind.
