This tall, handsome and incredibly detailed carving was created by Paul-Emile Caron (1915-1987). A master Sculpteur du Bois (wood sculptor) from St.-Jean-Port-Joli, Quebec, Canada, Caron began carving in the early 1950's in his studio there. This extremely tall mustachioed man playing his violin was meticulously carved from local butternut wood, left unpainted and varnished.
The carving surprisingly retains its original violin bow. From the buttons on his vest to the side seams in his trousers to the laces in his boots, Caron spared no detail. Measuring from the bottom edge of the rectangular plinth to the top of his head, the piece stands 25 inches tall. The base measures about 7 1/2 by 6 inches; it's covered on the bottom with the red felt Caron used. Measuring a bit over 7 inches across his elbows, the carving weighs 5 pounds. It's signed 'Caron', chiseled into the front edge of the base. We've included a photo of Paul-Emile Caron at work.
The wood sculpture is in excellent condition, with wear to the scroll below his left hand that resulted in roughening of the wood (shown). There are no cracks, chips or other damage. The piece displays beautifully, a focal point in any room and an excellent carving for the music lover.
