Purchased in the 1980's on the Venetian island of Murano, this glass piece is a large example of the "wrapped hard candy" that is more commonly made life-size, about 2 inches long. Many so-called Murano items are actually made in countries other than Italy and should be termed "Murano style' or "Murano type," but we can firmly state this is genuine Murano.

This type of glass is properly called "caneworked" or "cane glass;" rods or canes of glass are sliced into cross sections when cool to create layered patterns. Although this piece resembles "millefiori," with that technique, the canes of glass are molded into a star shape. When cut into cross section, the pieces resemble flowers (mille fiori is Italian for thousand flowers). Either way, it results in very beautiful glass.

Measuring 6 1/2 inches long to the tips of the longest points of the "wrapper" ends, this is large enough to use as a paperweight. Weighing a little over a pound, it's 1 1/2 inches tall and 2 1/2 inches wide at the belly. In excellent condition, this is a glowing glass statement piece wherever it's placed.
