These bowls are yellow ware pottery covered with a brown and green glaze called "Woodland Glaze." Made by the Morton Pottery of Morton, Illinois, in the 1920's, they were sponged and spattered and daubed with a brush onto the yellow stoneware and then a clear overglaze was applied. Both the interior and the base are glazed as well as the exterior. The local clay that fired to this yellow color was exhausted by 1940; after that the clay was imported from South Carolina and Indiana, and that clay fired white.
The two bowls nest one inside the other. The smaller one measure 8 inches in diameter and 3 3/4 inches in height, with a 4 1/4 inch diameter base. The larger one is 9 1/4 inches across, 4 1/2 inches in height and has a 5 inch diameter base. they weigh 2 pounds and 2 3/4 pounds, respectively.
Both bowls are in amazingly good condition, given that were intended for heavy kitchen use. There are no chips, cracks, hairlines, stains or other damage and they are still glossy. When not being put to use, these bowls beautifully decorate your home.
JUST A NOTE: The Morton Pottery sponged yellow ware pitcher shown in one of our photos is available here:
