This vintage wooden mug is a souvenir of Onset Bay, Massachusetts. It was carved from a section of a small log and retains the beautiful natural birch grain and the bark along the bottom. A bark covered branch serves as the handle. The highly detailed, colorful transfer on front of a Native American man is a typical decoration on these mementoes that are nicknamed "weird wood."

The rustic look of this tankard style mug appealed to travelers in the early part of the twentieth century; those who could afford it went to luxury "camps" to relax and the interest in American Indians and their art was surging.

The mug is 7 1/2 inches tall, with a mouth 3 1/4 inches in diameter. The body tapers to a 4 inch wide base; the bottom is unvarnished, with the concentric tree rings displayed along with the drilled center hole that allowed the log to be worked on a lathe. The hand printed signature of J.W. Bodman and the date Aug. 24th 1927 may be that of the artist or the owner. It's unusual to find one of these mugs signed and dated.

This souvenir weighs 3/4 of a pound and is in excellent condition, with no splits, chips or cracks and only small flakes missing on the picture and off the bark on the handle. It's a great decorative collectible, one that fits with many different areas of collecting.
