A superb wood fired stoneware platter, this piece was hand made by River Falls, Wisconsin studio potter Jan McKeachie Johnston. The salt-glazed oval slab platter is a matte chocolate brown, decorated with pale peach slip trailing and a pie crust rim. The underside displays five kiln marks and a wave pattern pressed into the clay. The potter's mark, the letters JMc in a rectangle, are impressed on the bottom as well. We've included a photo of her in her studio that she shares with her husband, potter Randy Johnston.

This platter is very heavy, weighing 7 pounds, 10 ounces. A great size for a centerpiece, it's 18 inches long and 12 inches wide. It is 3 inches high, tapering down to 2 inches high at one end. It's in excellent condition, with no damage and no discernible wear.

Jan McKeachie Johnston has stated that she explores "the intersection between traditional pottery and modern art." Her beautiful platter bears out this philosophy, making itself at home in both traditional and modern interiors.

Jan has been a studio pottery for over 40 years. Her work has been featured in the publications Clay Times and Ceramics Monthly and is included in the collections of the Weisman Art Museum at the University of Minnesota, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and the Chrysler Museum in Norfolk, VA. She has participated in important national and international exhibitions, including American Shino at Babcock Galleries, New York, NY in 2001; the Moegi Gallery’s 18 American Potters exhibit, Japan in 1997; Sculptural Utility, a solo exhibition at Lacoste Gallery, Concord, MA in 2004; and A Touch of Humanity, Schaller Gallery in 2018. She has been a guest artist in St. Louis, MO, Kansas City, MO, St. Paul, MN and Santiago, Chile.
