This Italian Tessuto vase is a mid-century modern pottery piece, named after the Italian word for "fabric" or "woven textile" due to its distinctive woven or ribbed textured design. The term Tessuto originally refers to a famous Murano hand-blown glass technique pioneered by architect Carlo Scarpa for Venini in the 1940's. Italian ceramicists translated that look using stoneware clay for this vase.
This soaring, slender bottle-shaped vase features vertical grooves in relief down the length of the body. The textured ridges allow the glazes to run down the sides in stripes during firing. The glaze colors are beige, burgundy and black. There are numbers and letters hand etched into the bottom, typical with these vases, denoting a model or mold number.
The handmade vase measures 20 3/4 inches tall with a 4 1/4 inch diameter base and weighs a sturdy 5 pounds. In excellent condition, it has no chips, cracks or damage. This MCM vase is a statement piece wherever its displayed.
