This large, colorful painting is oil on a canvas board, signed lower right by an artist named Golosoff. While Golosoff is a Slavic name (alternatively spelled Golosov), this scene reminds us of a Latin American one--Mexico, Central or South America or even Cuba. The man with his straw hat, striped shirt, bandanna around his neck and wearing work boots seems to be relaxing after a long day working the land. He is seated on a red, three-legged stool at the top of a set of steps, strumming his guitar. The walls are an adobe color; high on one wall is an open window with a black ball vase filled with red flowers sitting on the windowsill. There is a name signed in pencil on the back---first name Mae, last name illegible--possibly the name of the previous owner.
This painting measures 16 inches by 20 inches and weighs not quite 1 1/4 pounds. It's in very good condition, with some wear to the edges and corners and a few light marks on the painting's background areas. We are leaving it as found, unframed, since it is easily propped that way on a shelf or on the floor. There are small areas of impasto, but the paint is primarily flat. It's an eye-catching original painting that looks great in many different rooms and types of interiors.
