This vintage folk art cane was hand carved of Honduras mahogany, usually referred to as "genuine mahogany." The wood is handsome, an aged reddish-brown color with interesting natural markings. The exotic lizard, head raised, is perched at the point where the length of the cane curves into a handle, its four legs wrapped around the shaft. The upper two-thirds of the stick is carved in relief with a running pattern of loops and swirls, an elegant and restrained design. The tapering lower one-third is smooth and undecorated. For a finishing touch, the end of the handle is inset with a teardrop shaped piece of abalone shell. There is no evidence of the cane ever having been painted. The bottom end tip does not have a ferrule and does not appear to have had one in the past, although the wood there is not worn.
The cane measures 35 1/2 inches long overall, from the top of the handle to the bottom tip. The handle measures 6 1/2 inches from the top of the lizard's head to the other end. It weighs just over one pound and is in excellent condition, with only tiny splits in the wood here and there, but no major breaks or chips. A fine-looking cane for use, it's also a wonderful addition to a collection of canes and/or folk art.
