The first can opener with a sharp end to puncture cans was patented in 1858. It was a welcome replacement for hammer and chisel. The metal bottle cap was invented in 1892 by William Painter, who followed up with the invention of the bottle opener in 1894. Ever since, collectors have enjoyed finding unique bottle and can openers.

This one of a kind church key was hand forged of iron circa 1900 and combines both bottle and can openers. The irregularly shaped bottle opener end has a small tab to facilitate popping the cap off. Beneath that is an indented circle containing a raised five petal flower design. The shaft has a spiral twist terminating in the head of a crow with two protruding eyes, a curved beak and open jaw, the better to open cans and flat tops.

This folk art church key measures 8 inches long and weighs about 5 ounces. It's in excellent condition with no damage and just a small amount of light rust. We were fascinated by the workmanship and imagination that the blacksmith who made this used for this utilitarian item when he could have made it plain and simple much easier. A true piece of folk art!
