This beautiful tall candlestick was made in Bavaria in the early 1900's. It was hand painted in the Art Nouveau style, popular from about 1890 until World War I. In French, it means "New Art;" in Bavaria, that translated to "Jugendstil" in German. The painted linear designs and the flowing curve of the bell-bottom body are classic characteristics of this art movement.

The porcelain is a lovely shade of cream, best represented in photos # 2 and #9--some of the others have greenish or yellowish tints which are not actually there. The designs are predominantly in shades of blue with a touch of seafoam green and with a single diamond of red front and back. Bands of gilt, outlined in black, encircle the designs top and bottom and the gold trims the upper rim, also. It's signed by the artist R.T. on the underside and dated 1913. It was also stamped 'Bavaria' by one of the many porcelain factories there. It was sold as a blank so an artist could decorate it herself and as such, was not given a company mark, just the country of origin.

This candlestick measures 10 3/4 inches tall, 5 1/2 inches across the bottom and 2 1/2 inches across the upper rim. The candlecup is 1 1/8 inches in diameter. It weighs 1 1/4 pounds and is in exceptional condition. There are no chips or cracks or hairlines and the paint is pristine. There is a tiny divot in the underside of the rim that was done in the manufacture and is shown in photo # 8 and there is shelf wear on the underside of the bottom rim.

The geometric shapes on this elegant candlestick have some of the flavor as well of the Arts and Crafts movement, which make it the perfect accent in many interiors.
