Faces are fascinating and this hand made pottery sculpture is a prime example. Made from a creamy stoneware clay, it's both realistic and stylized. While the eyes, nose and unibrow are fairly natural, for example, the floral design on the forehead is not and neither is the philtrum (the cleft under the nose). The curly hair is poked full of tiny holes and the parted cupid's bow lips are perched almost on the edge of the chin. The cheekbones are indicated with curved ridges and all of the details are highlighted with a brown glaze.
On the right side of face's edge is the sculptor's signature, which we think reads "Shyvik." The mask is about 7 1/2 inches from the top of the head to the tip of the chin and 5 1/2 inches wide across the cheeks, with a thickness of 1 1/2 inches. The back is hollow but has a raised edge with a depth of about 1 inch, so it can be hung on a screw or nail or propped on a shelf, alone or mixed in a grouping, It weighs 1 1/2 pounds and is in excellent condition, with no cracks or chips. This mask sculpture adds an exotic note to any décor.
