This exceptionally large basket was hand woven of ash splints. The very talented basket maker used dyed green and red weavers made into curls in two bands around the circumference, which is 44 inches at its widest. The basket stands 11 inches tall, is 16 1/2 inches across the top and has a base diameter of about 11 inches. The mouth is slightly oval, measuring 9 inches by 9 1/2 inches, and is large enough to pop in a vase of flowers---fresh, silk, or dried as we have done---or a leafy potted plant.

This basket is based on the Pueblo Vase basket on page 94 in the book "Handmade Baskets" by Lyn Siler (1991). The author pointed out some of its uses and then wrote "It is nice and decorative, however, just left empty." The maker of this one hand initialed it in ink on the bottom 'J.n.' and dated it '96.

Ash splints are flexible and those used in this basket, which have a slightly greenish tone, remain pliant. There are a few curls that are broken off on the lower band (see photograph # 3--be sure to zoom); the ones on the upper band are all intact. The basket is in otherwise excellent condition, with no other breaks, no stains and the colors of the dyed splints still lovely. Its imposing size alone makes it a focal point in any room.
