Haeger Pottery of East Dundee, Illinois, was one of a group of well-known American producers of art pottery like this very large white elephant. Its style is a blend of Art Deco and Mid-Century Modern and works beautifully with either décor. According to an article in, "White elephants are considered very auspicious. It is said that the Buddha’s mother dreamt of a white elephant before she gave birth to him. As elephants are considered to act as saviors and protectors, placing the statue at the front door is considered to be lucky. If you want to guard your home from evil or negative energy, you can place it facing outwards, according to Feng Shui."

This pure white elephant stands 16.5 inches tall and measures the same from trunk to tail. The irregularly shaped base is 8 1/2 by 5 inches at the widest points and it weighs 5 pounds 5 ounces. (The one pound peanut can is about 4 3/4 inches high, for comparison.) It is unmarked save for the letter "R" penciled on the bottom (for Royal?). We peeked under the green felt circle and there is nothing else written there. There is evidence that a label had been on the bottom, probably the paper Haeger label. We're dating this statue from the 1980's. The company was known for its glazes, especially the durability. This piece demonstrates that by its lack of crazing, chipping, hairlines or other damage. It's really in superb condition and a great statement piece in any room.
