William H. "Bill" Cranmer (1917-2008) was one of the talented decoy carvers of the forty-five mile waterway of Barnegat Bay. Bill and his wife owned The Webfoote Shoppe on Long Beach Island, New Jersey, from 1959 to 1969 selling Bill's decoy carvings. While Bill made the hollow "dugout" type decoys for gunning that were almost exclusive to that area, he also carved and hand painted solid wood exhibition decoys such as this handsome pair of mallards.

Bill carved these ducks the first year he owned his store, in 1959; they're one-third size, 8 inches long compared to the average 24 inch length of a real mallard. He carved them both with their heads turned to the right for a realistic pose and painted them in a highly detailed and natural manner. Both ducks have glass eyes.

One of his personal signature marks is to identify each bird by its scientific name, in this case 'Anas platyrhynchos'. He also hand signed each one on its bottom 'Mallard Female' and 'Mallard Male' along with WH Cranmer 1959.

These carvings have been well taken care of in the last 63 years. There are no chips, cracks or breaks and the paint is intact save for a bit rubbed off here and there. They each weigh right around 1/4 of a pound and are a great pair of collectible birds.
