OVERVIEW
- Vintage item
Quirky and charming, this fabulous tea set was hand made by a Jekyll Island, Georgia, studio potter. Consisting of teapot, cream pitcher and sugar bowl, each piece was formed as a small man, complete with hat lids, brown hair and black shoes and black belts held through belt loops (!). All three are made from a rough, speckled tan clay with khaki green the predominant glaze color. The artist signed these pieces by incising conjoined initials on the bottom that read AWK (or ANK) and JEKYLL, for Jekyll Island, Georgia. There is also a number--8100--that may be a date (8/1/2000) or simply a notation by the potter.
The teapot weighs 2 3/4 pounds and stands 7 inches tall to the top of the knob on his hat. He measures 8 inches front to back, from the tip of the nose to his tied-back hair. The cream pitcher weighs slightly over a pound and is 5 1/2 inches in height and 5 inches nose to hair. The peak of his hat lid forms the pouring spout and his hair forms the handle. The sugar bowl weighs about the same as the creamer and is 5 inches tall and about 4 inches front to back. All six pieces are in outstanding condition--no chips, no cracks, no wear.
While the word "unique" is wildly overused, we do think this imaginative tea set is truly one of a kind art pottery. By the way, the word "fabulous" means both "amazingly good" and "imaginary." We think both definitions fit this tea set.
