This antique baby dish from famed Roseville Pottery is part of their Juvenile line, designed by Frederick Hurten Rhead and introduced in 1910. This is one of Roseville's nursery rhyme dishes, with a colorful transfer in the bottom that illustrates "BABY BUNTING TAKES HIS HOE AND TRIES TO HELP THE FLOWERS GROW." Some of these creamware items were marked with the impressed RV mark, but most were not, including this example.

The flat upper rim, which corrals the porridge while feeding baby, features the words "BABY'S PLATE" stamped in black. The center of the outside of the bowl has a ridge with a green line running both above and below. The bowl measures 7 1/2 inches across, 1 1/2 inches high and weighs 1 1/2 pounds. The bottom is clean and shows the three stilt marks from the kiln and a few glaze pops and drips (hard to see but mentioned for accuracy). The bowl is in very good condition, especially for a child's pottery piece that saw daily use. There are no chips or cracks; the typical crazing on these pieces is present on this one but not heavily stained; it's magnified and exaggerated by our close-up photos. The one flaw is a scrape across the transfer illustration, which erased the letter "O" in hoe and bits of the letters below that. For the collector, the lovely condition of this antique Roseville bowl is a delight.
