This beautifully glazed hand made pot is the work of Cleveland, Ohio potter Paul F. Demeter. Active in the 1960's and 1970's, Demeter's work is in the Cleveland Museum of Art and has been awarded many prizes in juried art shows over the years. The fine, off-white stoneware clay of this bowl vase was wheel thrown, exhibiting his finger marks on the interior. The glaze is both navy blue and forest green, overlaid with dramatic swirls and daubs of dark tan, all in a matte finish. The glaze is peppered with glaze pops throughout and is a bit rough to the touch in spots.
The pot stands 5 1/2 inches tall, has a 4 1/4 inch diameter mouth and an 18 inch circumference around the ridged upper rim. The weight is 1 1/4 pounds. Both the 1/4 inch high foot and the indented bottom are dry; the base measures 2 3/4 inches across. The potter's hand-inscribed signature "DEMETER" in on the bottom; we have seen his pieces signed "PD" or "DEMETER" or both. It's in excellent condition, a handsome piece of modern pottery.
