This antique porcelain vase, made in Bavaria, Germany, prior to World War I, has a hand painted basket of cherries and leaves, along with strawberries and blackberries, dramatically set against a chocolate brown background. The vase is stamped in gold on the bottom with the mark of Royal Munich, consisting of a standing, crowned lion within a shield, surrounded by the words "ROYAL MUNICH." Experts in Bavarian porcelain tend to believe that Royal Munich was a decorating studio, hand painting blanks from Bavarian manufacturers. The Royal Munich mark is often found on pieces by Zeh, Scherzer & Co, Bavaria, but also on porcelains made by other companies.

The vase is in lovely condition, with no cracks, chips or crazing. It's 7 1/2 inches tall, with a 2 3/4 inch wide mouth that's rimmed in matte gold. The shape gracefully tapers from a narrow neck to a base 3 1/4 inches in diameter and the piece weighs 14 ounces. The dark brown background and the fruits theme seems to have been a favored one with Royal Munich and German buyers, so other pieces in this pattern (which identifies as 7447) can be found.
