Spongeware vases don't seem to turn up very often, so this tall pottery one is a welcome find for the collector. Standing 9 inches tall with a 5 1/2 inch diameter, the cylinder shape flares to a thick rim at the bottom. It's made of speckled, creamy white clay with tightly packed overall sponging and a glossy top glaze. Weighing 2 1/4 pounds, the vase sits nice and flat and is very sturdy.
The unsponged, but glazed, bottom clearly shows the three spur marks from the kiln and has a tiny painted brown letter or symbol. The fact that the vase is fully glazed allows it to hold water--we tested. It's in superb condition, ready to hold long stemmed flowers or to just sit a spell on your shelf or table.
