This is a limited edition print of an original drawing by Charles Bragg (1931-2017) entitled "Ernest Dribbler," a wonderful play on words by an artist with a renowned sense of humor. Charles Bragg was a printmaker, painter and sculptor whose works are in the collections of tens of museums, including the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, D.C., the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and the Pushkin Museum in Moscow. PBS made a documentary about him called "Charles Bragg -- One of a Kind." He published a book on his work entitled "Charles Bragg: The Works! A Retrospective." His awards include a Gold Medal from the National Society of Illustrators and his work was commissioned by Playboy Magazine (Bragg called these his "Naughties").
Bragg's satirical caricatures like this one became very popular in the 1980's, which is when we estimate this print was made, and they're often compared to those of Honoré Daumier, another artist fond of mocking society's foibles. This print is number 96 of a total of 150; Bragg notated this in pencil beneath the lower plate mark, along with the title and below that his signature.
The actual size of this limited edition print is 4 inches by 10 inches, with the framed size 12 inches by 18 inches and a weight of 2 pounds 5 ounces. The mat is double cut, the top mat white and bottom mat gilt. The very good-looking wood frame is covered in burl veneer, with diamond and stripe inlay around the inner edges and the outer edges painted black. The print was custom framed by Jerry Solomon in Los Angeles, a prominent shop not far from Bragg's home in Beverly Hills. The dust paper and horizontal hanging wire on the back are in good shape. The print is pristine, the frame and glass in excellent condition. This is a great work from an eminent California artist and a delight to own.
