This darling porcelain figurine was made by the famous Danish firm of Bing & Grondahl in Copenhagen. This popular piece depicts a boy and girl, side by side, reading together from an open book on their laps. It's commonly called "Reading Children" and was designed by the Danish sculptor Ingeborg Plockross Irminger (1872-1962) who was affiliated with B & G from 1898 to 1925. We've included a picture of her at work, from a painting by her husband, Danish artist Valdemar Irminger, painted in 1909. Her figurines so captured the fancy of the Danes that most homes in Denmark proudly displayed at least one.

This figurine was made between 1958 and 1962, with the green stamped mark on the bottom used during those years. It consists of three towers which are derived from the Coat of Arms of Copenhagen. Beneath those is B & G, then the word "Kjøbenhavn," (the Danish word for their capital city of Copenhagen) followed by the word DANMARK, then a blue B & G, then the model number 1567 and finally the artist's initials, C over A.

This first quality realism figurine measures 4 inches tall, 3 1/2 inches wide and weighs 10 ounces. In excellent condition with no chips, cracks or other flaws, with only slight "shelf dirt" on the bottom, it is a beautiful figurine to add to a Danish porcelain collection or to adorn a tabletop, chest or shelf.
