From Barrio Porvenir in Mata Ortiz Pueblo, northern Mexico, comes this miniature seed pot made by Julio Mora. Hand coiled, thin walled as porcelain, and beautifully hand painted, it was made from local pale tan clay, shaped and polished, with a pleasing silky surface. It was then decorated with traditional motifs of stylized black feathers tipped in green, a Mayan meander pattern at the rim and a black zigzag pattern beneath the feathers. The painted decorations are so fine they were applied with a brush that has only a few bristles of human hair. The bottom is painted with one of Julio Mora's iconic nature drawings, in this case a roadrunner. His signature 'Julio Mora" in script, shown in our photo, is incised on one side.

Julio Mora is one of the artists featured in the book on Mata Ortiz pottery entitled "The Many Faces of Mata Ortiz." He is shown in the photo holding some of his pottery. Miniatures like this one take a great amount of time and patience to make and paint and are highly collectible. It's important to understand that this is truly a miniature pot; we've included a small avocado in one of our photos to give an idea of the size. The seed pot measures 2 inches across the top and stands 1 inch high. It's in like-new condition, with no discernible wear. This is a superb example of Julio Mora's artistry with clay and paint. It has been said of him that he prefers to be a cowboy, but we're glad he takes the time to make his pottery, also.
