Wisdom Bowl by Megan Dull - Ohio Ceramic Artist
- Vintage item
Hand carved letters encircling this gorgeous "Wisdom Bowl" also make it a "Promise Bowl": "I PROMISE TO BE YOUR PARTNER IN ALL THINGS, NOT POSSESSING YOU, BUT WORKING WITH YOU AS PART OF THE WHOLE. I PROMISE TO SHARE WITH YOU THE JOYS OF LIFE BECAUSE WITH YOU THEY WILL BE THAT MUCH SWEETER." Hand made pottery by Ohio ceramic artist Megan Dull, this piece has vibrant colors and textures and different designs inside and out.
The inside of the bowl was glazed in a deep blue green with a heavily pebbled surface that reflects the light and gives it depth. Three large black swirls with a surprisingly smooth finish complete the interior design. The outside is glazed in a sanded, matte adobe shade that feels somewhat sandy to the touch. It has six deeply carved designs, each one different, joined together with a meandering line. Since it's made of white clay, this isn't sgraffito work, as that reveals the true color of the clay. These incised lines were filled in with black glaze and they created a scalloped upper rim. The bowl is footed and within the circular foot is the artist's etched signature "MEGAN DULL, SND."
Megan Dull is a 1971 graduate of Notre Dame College in South Euclid, Ohio, and later joined the faculty there, teaching ceramics and 3D design. She is also a longtime member of the Sisters of Notre Dame (SND). She has said about her ceramics art, "Clay reminds us of the link between our bodies and the life energies of the earth. The sculptural work emerges from earth itself – cracked, fissured, an elemental substance acted on by fire and geologic time."
This beautiful bowl measures 8 1/2 inches across the top, 4 1/2 inches tall and sits on a 3 inch diameter round base. It weighs almost 3 pounds and is in excellent condition, still retaining its original, immaculate descriptive card from Megan Dull's TerraVista Studio in Cleveland, Ohio, along with her business card. This beautiful bowl would make a wonderful gift to someone dear as well as a treat for yourself.
