This beautiful hand thrown pottery bowl was made of red clay by ceramic artist Aurelie Schmid of Winchester, Virginia. The soft pale green glaze is shaded, dripped and speckled with rusty tan and blue green overglazes. The applied, grooved handles, wrapped over the rim, are highlighted with the tan glaze also. Ms. Schmid's finger marks are evident both inside and out. The dry bottom shows the natural color of the clay and is incised with the artist's signature "A. Schmid," glazed in green.
Born in France, Ms. Schmid, a member of the Shenandoah Potters Guild, specializes in functional pottery like this bowl. After making the bowl on her wheel and letting it dry, she fires the form, glazes it and the fires it again, a process that takes about two weeks from start to finish.
The bowl measures 9 inches across, is 2 1/2 inches deep and weighs 3 pounds. It is in excellent condition, with one short firing crack on the swirled interior bottom that's filled in with the tan glaze. It's perfect to display alone and it makes a lovely fruit bowl (sorry, our dragon fruit is not included).
