This shapely stoneware clay vase, drenched in a rich turquoise glaze inside and out, is the creation of Peggy Vrana of Earthsea Pottery in Cambria, California. Using the wax resist technique, Ms. Vrana left unglazed a band of the tan clay and topped it with stylized leaves and tendrils and narrow bands of the same turquoise. The cylinder shaped, slightly waisted vase is 7 inches tall, 4 inches across the mouth and base and weighs in at about 2 pounds. Incised on the dry base is the artist's signature in script: "Vrana."
Husband and wife potters Peggy Vrana and Michael Miller have been making art pottery together and individually for 38 years. Their works are in private collections in 15 countries and they have won many awards. We've included a photo of the artist at her wheel; she finds her inspiration in nature and the designs of ancient cultures and often uses repetitive patterns, like the ones on this vase.
This very appealing stoneware vase by a well-known artist is in excellent condition and a delight to display.
