This large red clay jug was hand made and hand painted in Tonalá, Mexico. Decorated in the Fantasia style, with a white fox, black trees and a pair of Flores de Tonalá (Tonalá flowers), the predominant colors are soft: rust, grey, beige and black. This type of ceramic art is called barro bruñido, meaning burnished pottery in Spanish, done by polishing with a stone or with the mineral pyrite, resulting in the smooth surface. It's signed in black on the bottom: "R. Mateos" and "Mexico," both emphatically double underlined.

The bulbous pot, 12 1/2" tall to the top of the handle, has a small pour spot and a larger fill spout. The 6 inch tall strap handle is thick and sturdy, measuring 1 3/4 inches wide. The pot is about 28 inches in circumference around the belly, tapering to a round base about 5 inches in diameter. It weighs a hefty 3 1/2 pounds and is in outstanding condition, with no cracks or chips. It's a beautiful and decorative piece of Mexican folk art.
