This beautiful stoneware lidded bowl was hand made and hand painted with a bouquet of irises on the lid and one inside the bowl. The colors are lavender, blue, cream and brown, with green for the iris leaves. The glazes are smooth and matte and the painting lovely, somewhat reminiscent of Rookwood's irises. It's signed with an incised "mh" on the bottom, for Tom Mason and Susan (Su) Holder of Mason/Holder Stoneware in Price, Texas. The pottery was founded in 1979; Tom did the throwing and Su did the glazing and decorating. Their pottery was featured in Ceramics Monthly Magazine in May, 1984. The couple taught ceramic classes in The Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, also.
The lid has a broad round knob, sturdy enough to lift the lid, which is quite heavy, as is the bowl. The bowl has a raised inner rim which the lid rests on firmly. The bowl with lid stands 6 inches tall to the top of the knob. It's 3 inches deep inside and 7 1/2 inches across (with the lid on, 8 3/4 inches across). The piece weighs a surprising 4 pounds. No cracks, no chips, no noticeable wear---a pretty stoneware bowl to use and display.
