A pleasing find for the folk art lover, this wooden bowl was hand painted with a charming pastoral scene. Three pine trees that resemble feather trees are set against a sponged blue sky. The tall tree in the center towers over two blackface sheep, nestled at the foot of the tree. Two white fences in the mottled green pastureland complete the scene. The bowl's flat rim is painted brown and tiger-striped in black to mimic grain painting.
The bottom of the bowl is painted dark green with tiny stippled strokes to resemble blades of grass. There are seven groups of standing blackface sheep, three in a group, six groups around the perimeter of the bowl and one on the flat base. The bowl is out of round due to shrinkage of the wood over the years, so it measures 8 1/4 inches across in one direction and 7 15/16 inches the other way. It's 2 1/2 inches high and sits on a slightly oval base 3 inches by 3 1/4 inches. The bowl weighs 14 ounces and is in very good condition with no cracks or chips but does have some wear to the paint on the bottom (shown in our photo). It's a great primitive, reminiscent of old folk art paintings.
