Made of local red clay with a high gloss mocha brown glaze, this rectangular wall tray is Swiss pottery, created by the ceramic artists of the Kohler pottery studio in Biel, Switzerland. The limited available information about this studio is that it was founded by the brothers Markus and Stefan Kohler and it closed in 1995. Their pottery is instantly recognizable, decorated with floral motifs trimmed with geometrics and Alpine scenes such as this charming young cowherd with his milk cow. The designs were skillfully applied with many colors of liquid clay called slip, earning the pottery the name slipware, and they are brimming with fine details.

The tray measures 11 1/4 inches long and 6 inches from top to bottom. It's 1 1/2 inches high and weighs 1 pound 10 ounces. In excellent condition, with no flaws, the tray has a hanging wire installed on the back, as well as 4 small felt circles for protection. There is a hand written inscription on the back reads " Kohler Biel Handarbeit {work done by hand...hand made}." (This signature distinguishes the Kohler brothers' pottery from another Kohler who worked in Biel whose name was Hugo and who typically stamped his pottery HUGO KOHLER BIEL into the bottom.) The artist's initial is scratched into the glaze, also.

This is a highly decorative piece of Swiss folk art pottery that dates from 1970-1980, lovely to hang on the wall or prop on a shelf and admire.
