In 1957, German porcelain manufacturer Rosenthal hired famed Danish artist Bjørn Wiinblad (1918-2006) as Chief Designer. He created designs for their contemporary porcelain line called Studio-Linie, including this vase from his "Romanze" (Romance) range, one of his favorite subjects. This charming bulbous bottomed piece with its tall cylinder neck has molded rows of embossed ovals and dots, overlaid with gilded flowers, a different motif on each side. The porcelain is pure white with a semi-matte glaze.
The printed green mark on the bottom that includes "studio-linie" between the Rosenthal logo and the country of origin name "Germany" dates this vase to the early 1970's. Additional information includes the form name "romanze" and "design: Bjorn Wiinblad," followed by his signature.
The vase stands 10 1/2 inches tall, measures 5 inches across the belly and sits on a 2 1/2 inch diameter round base. It is in like-new condition, retaining its original inspection sticker on the bottom. The overall effect is simple and timeless, justifying Rosenthal's slogan for their Studio-Linie porcelains: ”Originals of Our Time.”
