Richard Aerni of Rochester, New York, has achieved national stature as an incredibly accomplished studio potter and this large, spectacular platter is an outstanding example of his talent. Since 1979, he has been a self-supporting ceramic artist, perfecting the wood ash glazes he uses with such superb results. This piece he created in 1995 has raised slip trails in palest blue and branches in forest green atop an array of rust, deep green and beige pebbled surfaces. The glaze effects are striking.

The dished plate is set on a 1 inch high dark brown foot that elevates it nicely. The underside is a mottled brown, with the dry foot ring showing the white clay he used. In the center is his iconic mark ---Aerni inscribed in a double circle--- impressed in the clay along with the year date 95.

This beautiful, expertly potted platter measures 14 1/2 inches in diameter and weighs 5 3/4 pounds. It is in excellent condition and is a tour de force of ceramic artistry. This would make a terrific centerpiece!

>>>>Richard Aerni's works are displayed in numerous public collections, including the Crocker Museum of Art in Sacramento, CA; the American Art Museum at the Smithsonian and the American Craft Museum in New York City. Ceramic Monthly Magazine's permanent collection also displays Aerni's work; he was featured on their cover of the December, 1994 issue, which contained a lead article about him. It's shown in one of our photos, along with a more recent photo of him at his wheel.
