Beth and Doug Brown, the potters of "Potters Brown," began their collaboration in 1993. Doug had been making his pottery in Edom, Texas since 1971; they met at the Edom Art Fair in 1992 and fell in love. This gorgeous pottery bowl is hand signed on the bottom "Potters Brown" so it dates after 1993. The next to the last photograph shows their charming location in Edom.
Potters Brown's glazing technique uses hot wax. The beautifully painted abstract flower design in shades of green, red, gold and copper has a sparkling, glowing surface. The metallic copper glaze trims the rim and continues on to the underside. The round, slightly convex foot is unglazed and reveals the grainy, high-fired stoneware clay. To quote Beth, "Our copper-colored background with multiple colors on top has held strong for many years, so why change it?"
The shape is asymmetrical and swooping, giving it a very modern look that complements the polychrome design. Each of the four sides measure approximately 7 inches and it stands 3 inches high at each of the four corners--some a little more and some a little less--and the piece weighs about 1 1/2 pounds. The body and glaze are both in excellent condition and it's truly a one of a kind pottery work of art.
