A wonderful, large Palissy ware platter, this vintage majolica pottery piece was made in the Caldas da Rainha, Portugal. The dark red lobster lies on a bed of sand on the textured ocean bottom that's complete with seaweed, seafoam and clams nestled in aquatic plants. The rich, natural colors and variety of surfaces---smooth and rough, glossy and matte---make this platter endlessly intriguing to view.

Palissy ware is named after the French potter Bernard Palissy (c. 1510 – c. 1589), who originated this type of ceramics and called it "rustique" {in the rustic style}. Palissy modeled his marine life, flora and fauna on those he found in and around Paris and the Seine. True Palissy ware from the 16th century has transparent glazes, whereas the later pieces like this one have the opaque tin glaze that marks them as majolica. Palissy is still being made--check out Loire Valley ceramicist Geoffrey Luff, whose pieces can sell for thousands of dollars. This platter was made mid- twentieth century in the 1950's to 1960's.

Each part of the three-dimensional decorations is hand modeled and hand painted. The piece is 12 inches in diameter and weighs just under 4 pounds. The underside has a clear glaze over the white earthenware and has four perforations in the foot rim so the platter can be hung on the wall. The words "CALDAS PORTUGAL" are stamped into the clay. There are no chips, cracks, paint loss or restorations. Made simply to decorate and enchant, this Palissy platter is stunning on a table or shelf as well as art for the wall.

**Note that this is not a "spiny lobster," which have antennae that are about twice as long as their bodies.
