This needlepoint on canvas is finely stitched and handsomely framed. It's just the right size to prop on a shelf as well as hang on the wall. Rather than covering the canvas entirely, the artist chose to have a central figure, leaving the rest of the off-white canvas plain for a painterly effect. The colors of the embroidery floss are green leaves, red berries, brown branches and yellow, olive, black and grey for the sparrow.
The canvas is framed by a black linen mat that's about 1/2 inch wide. The wooden frame is 1 1/2 inches wide and is made of tiger maple trimmed with inner and outer moldings of black. The dust paper on the back is intact, as is the glass and there's a sawtooth hanger installed.
Overall dimensions are about 7 1/4 inches wide by 9 1/4 inches top to bottom and 3/4 inches thick. The canvas alone is 3 1/2 by 5 1/2. It's all in wonderful condition, with just some nicks to the wood frame that show age. (Any shadows on the needlepoint in the photographs are from the reflections on the glass; the work itself is pristine). It's a charming piece to stand alone or mix into a grouping.
