This jar is a good example of contemporary Pueblo pottery that, while made for the tourist trade, is modeled on traditional ceramics of the Native American Southwest. Made of whiteware cast in a mold, it was hand painted by the Isleta Pueblo artist with geometric designs in bright black and red pigments. This is the kind of pottery that was sold at tourist stops and roadside stands, especially along Route 66 (1926-1985) and at the train station in Albuquerque.

This pot stands 4 1/2 inches tall, measures 3 3/4 inches across the mouth and weighs 12 ounces. The 2 1/2 inch diameter base is stamped with "AMERICAN INDIAN POTTERY" and hand signed by the artist with a bear paw, drawn in black paint. No cracks or chips and minimal wear to the paint...a nice collectible piece from New Mexico.
