Well-known studio potter Judy Mohr of Tucson, Arizona, named these dishes her "Petroglyph Plates." She hand made them of high-fired stoneware clay, glazed in speckled matte earth colors in tones of brown, cream and soft blue. Petroglyphs are images created on rock surfaces by carving or scratching through to the lighter colored rock underneath. Judy Mohr created her rock art with glazes, decorating the dishes with the prehistoric, native imagery that has made her work so popular. Word is that Sir Paul McCartney and his late wife Linda collected Judy Mohr pottery.
The dishes measure 5 by 7 inches and 5 1/2 by 7 1/4 inches; they weigh 10 and 11 ounces, respectively. They stand about an inch high and are hand signed on the rough, dry bottom "Judy" in brown glaze. Both plates are in excellent condition, with no cracks, chips or other flaws. They are wonderful examples of southwest art pottery by a talented artist.
