A very pretty bowl, this Sometsuke (underglaze blue and white) porcelain piece was made in Japan in the 1980's or 1990's. The hand painted decorative designs in light and dark blues include trees, butterflies, flowers, leaves and vines. The porcelain body has a distinct blue tint and there are blue rings on the top and bottom rims and inside the bowl, also. The mark in blue on the bottom consists of Japanese characters in a square; the characters read "Teien," which translates appropriately to "garden." This was the mark of a late twentieth century Japanese ceramics manufacturer.
The height of the bowl is 3 inches and it measures 5 inches across the top with a base diameter of about 2 1/2 inches. It's in wonderful condition and a nice size to use as your rice bowl or as a candy dish or to just admire.
