This beautiful hand carved pair of sculptures was made in Indonesia. Known variously as Loro Blonyo*, The Inseparable Couple and Wedding Statues, they were sculpted of the lightweight wood of the pule tree and given a coat of gesso primer to provide a smooth surface for the hand applied polychrome paint. Body details like facial features, hands and ears are highlighted with paint; in addition, the clothing worn by the woman, who generally represents the fertility goddess Dewi Sri, is painted with batik designs (note her hairline, shaped to resemble lotus petals). Her male consort named Sadono wears a Nehru-style jacket that is decorated with intricate floral designs; his headpiece was gilded with a muted antique gold. They are seated on their heels, the matching bottom halves of their outfits carved and painted with stylized flower motifs.
While originally meant as religious figures, these sculptures are now used more decoratively and often given as wedding gifts. This pair measures 14 inches tall for the man and 13 inches tall for the woman. They measure about 5 inches front to back at the base and weigh approximately 1 1/2 pounds each. Both are in very good condition, with some fading and wear to the paint and tiny chips in the paint that reveal the white gesso beneath. There are no cracks to the wood and no missing pieces. The bottom of each, unfinished and unsigned, shows the marks of the hand chisel that was used to carve the statue. They are a striking pair and display beautifully.
* In Javanese, "Loro Blonyo" translates to "Inseparable Couple"
