This white pottery bowl has a lovely hand painted brown section of a bamboo tree trunk and two branches, one with seven green leaves (seven is considered a lucky number and is an important number in Buddhism). The rim was painted in a brown that was dabbed on. The reverse has marks painted in black. There is a symbol that resembles a Japanese character symbol in Kanji; it has the word "LOVE" stenciled next to it, but it is not the actual, correct symbol (although close) for the word "love." Below that is the word "RED" which presumably is the artist's mark, although we haven't identified it. While this bowl has a Japanese motif, we think it was done by an American ceramicist.
The dish is 9 inches by 9 inches, stands almost 2 inches high and weighs 1 1/2 pounds. Other than crazing in the clear glossy top glaze, it's in outstanding condition, ready to add an Asian note to your decor.
