A cross stitch Colonial domestic scene done in black on off-white linen, this 1910 embroidery was signed and dated by a woman named Cathryn. A man and woman sit across from each other, the table set with a steaming tureen and a pair of candelabra. Beneath them are the words "Give us this day our daily bread" with the signature and date at bottom right. Parts of the embroidery of the woman were done in a taupe thread. Perhaps Cathryn ran out of black thread?

The embroidery is under glass in a lovely old walnut frame with a gilt liner. The framed size is 12 inches by 14 inches, the sight size 9 1/2 by 11 1/2 and the depth about 2 inches. It's backed with a wood panel with a metal tab for hanging nailed at the top; the weight is 2 pounds. The whole piece is in very good condition, with the linen having just a few faint darkened areas, but no tears or snags. The embroidery thread is unfaded, the frame and glass are undamaged and this charming piece displays nicely.

>>> This was not an original creation by Cathryn. This design was preprinted and available at that time as design No. 217 by La Mode Needlecraft Co. in New York. Her choice of black thread against linen created a graphic look segueing into the Art Deco era.
