This charming wooden paddle was hand made about 1870, according to the hand written information on the back. A family member wrote, "Grandpa Fowler made this paddle about 1870." It was hand painted with a red farmhouse, sitting on a rise with a stream in the foreground of the snowy landscape. The handle color is a dark sage green with sponging; the background of the flat paddle is the same green, with browns and greys in the trees and ground.
This folk art piece measures 9 1/2 inches tall, with a 5/8 inch wide handle that has a carved out hole for hanging, and a 3 1/4 inch wide paddle. The reverse is unpainted except for some splashes on the edge from the front paint. The written inscription is in brown ink and appears to be done with a fountain pen. Found in Indiana, it's in wonderful condition and a great size for a wall hanging or propping on a shelf.
