The hand painted scene on this Chinese porcelain platter is superb: intricate, colorful, panoramic and filled with symbols of Chinese culture. Central to the design is the pair of red-crowned cranes, the national bird. Peaks of the Himalayas form the backdrop; to the right, there are pine trees with a pair of long-tailed birds, three peonies (the national flower) and gingko leaves (from the national tree). At the lower left, another bird is perched on bamboo growing next to a stream. Around the rim are blue bat designs surmounted by flowers. While there are many touches of gold, it is very tasteful; there are also dots of moriage on the rim decorations and on the oval pink flowers. There are white moriage leaves at the base of the stream, also.

This platter measures 10 1/4 inches in diameter and stands 1 inch high on a 6 1/2 inch diameter foot ring. It weighs about 1 3/4 pounds. The back is undecorated but has a high gloss clear glaze. It may have had a 'Made in China' label at some point but it's gone. The existing mark is stamped in iron red and is the number 114 with a dot over the four; numbers like this usually identify the mold or the factory. We feel this platter is later 20th century, from the 1980's. It's in excellent condition; only the dry foot ring has any soiling and wear.

Whether you display this artwork on your wall or a shelf, it will draw comments and compliments.
