The renowned silhouettist William Henry Brown {1808-1883} cut this full-body silhouette of John Marshall in 1844. The silhouette was placed against a lithographed background, denoting Marshall's important social standing. This American political lithograph was first published by Edmund and Elijah Kellogg in 1844. The Kellogg brothers were pioneer lithographers and printmakers in Hartford, Connecticut from about 1830 to 1874. In 1846, Brown published a book of lithographs titled "Portrait Gallery of Distinguished Americans With Biographical Sketches." This full-length silhouette was included in that volume and is of John Marshall {1755-1835}, Secretary of State under President John Adams and a Supreme Court Justice for 34 years. Marshall is dressed in a long frock coat and hat against a background of columns and a low balustrade. This example is a 1930's restrike.

The following information is in the matrix and is intact; often some or all is trimmed off or hidden by the mat.

Directly below the image, left margin, is "From life by Wm. H Brown." On the bottom right margin is "Lith. of EB & EC Kellogg". The title "JOHN MARSHALL." is in the center of the margin. Below that, in much smaller print, is a caption that reads: Entered according to act of Congress, in the year 1844, by EB & EC Kellogg, in the Clerk's Office of the District Court Of Connecticut.

The framed size of this lithograph is 18 1/2 inches tall and 13 3/4 inches wide, while the print is 16 3/4 inches by 12 inches. It is in excellent condition, with only minor toning, is unmatted and under glass. The narrow wooden black frame has a fluted inner gilt liner, gilded outer edges and is in very good condition, with three areas of dents to the bottom edge. The backing paper is intact and it has a hanging wire. This is a wonderful piece of history and a very handsome work of art.
