An unusual, striking painting of a desert scene, this oil on canvas by Oregon artist Patricia Richards is definitely one of a kind. The central figure is a tall rock formation, topped by the skull of a buffalo, in turn topped by a slab of petrified wood, worn like a hat. A red rock mesa looms in the background, with three birds wheeling against the clouds in the pale blue sky. Boulders nestle at the foot of the tall rock, surrounded by brittlebush. The round sign at bottom left decorated with three feathers is hand lettered with "Buffalo Sign." Is this a real place or imaginary?
The painting is signed lower right "Patricia Richards 88" and her name and address are hand written on the upper wooden stretcher on the back. The painting measures 16 inches by 20 inches and is unframed, with an old hanging wire. It's in very good condition, with no tears or other damage, just some flecks in the paint and flakes off the paint in the sky, all of which is greatly magnified by our close-up photos. It's a haunting desert scene and a very original work of art.
