OVERVIEW

  • Vintage item

David Ordoñez, a Guatemalan master artist born in 1951, is a Member of the National Geographic Society, the Smithsonian Institution, the Natural History Museum and founder of the El Dzunun Art Gallery and Ixchel Museum of Indigenous Costume in Guatemala City. He obtained his Doctor of Architecture at the University of Madrid at the age of 21. Many of his artworks are in museums such as the Art Museum of Granada and Managua, Nicaragua.

This beautiful framed artwork has a glossy, three dimensional surface. It portrays a woman and child set against masses of calla lilies. The oval portrait is surrounded by a lacquered brown self-mat with narrow metallic gold trim. The concave wood frame is painted in antique gold. The back of the artwork reveals the board foundation for the lithograph on paper and the paper tape used to seal it to the frame.

There is much information typed on an applied piece of paper that bears the red wax seal with the artist's signature. The title of the work is underlined: SN.{Saint} CRISTOBAL TOTONICAPAN GUATE., which is a church in the Guatemalan town of Totonicapan. The description of the media used by Ordonez is in Spanish; translated, it means : lithography on paper, cardboard base, stone texture, made with blades, lacquer and varnish finish (litografia en papel, base de carton piedra. textura realizada con cuchillas acabado de lacas y barnices). The technique produces a metallic three dimensional surface. There is also the place and date of creation: Guatemala 26-10-89, along with the artist's signature in brown ink. At bottom is the gallery where the art was for sale--El Dzunun, the one that Ordoñez himself founded.

The framed size of this piece is 9 3/4 inches by 11 3/8 inches and it weighs a bit over 1 pound. It's in excellent condition, with two flakes off the gold paint on the rear right corner the only flaws. It's fascinating art, done with an unusual technique.
